Ñaupay a Rural Community
Ñaupay is a rural community located in Lima-Peru with a high rate of poverty and infant mortality.
It has 108 families living in extreme poverty.
General context of Ñaupay
- Untreated water
- Hourly electricity.
- The community has a 2-hour electricity service on Sundays, provided by a community truck, and a public telephone, the equipment of which is very expensive.
- Homes do not have electricity.
Health Services
- 1 medical post equipped only with basic medical care for simple pathologies.
- More complex cases must be referred to the hospital, a 4-hour drive away.
- No antibiotics for respiratory illnesses.
- Health personnel are available – only a doctor and a nurse to attend the whole community.

- Infectious diseases
- Parasitic diseases
- Chronic malnutrition
- Anemia
- Osteoarthritis
- Birth in a rural home
Education
- There is only one primary school.
- There is no post-primary school.
- The nearest post-primary school is 4 hours away.
Community Strengths
- Strong community organization.
- Very active and committed board of directors.
- Organized and participatory community.
- Healthcare staff and teachers are highly committed to their work.
Challenges
- Rough and remote access.
- Lack of basic services.
- Low budget for health and education.
- High infant mortality.
What can be done?
- Providing basic supplies to the Medical Post would save lives and improve the health of the population.
- Nutrition programs.
- Combating anemia through iron supplements.
- Implementing a preschool center.
- Addressing special health cases that require complex interventions.
ÑAUPAY is an organized and participatory town where many results can be achieved with a small investment.
